I won’t say too much about the plot of A Mirror- it is certainly a play you should go into knowing very little about it. I went to the opening night of its West End run, and I’ve never been to the Trafalgar Theatre before, but it is the perfect venue for this production. It stars Jonny Lee Miller, mostly known for Trainspotting, however, my love for Miller comes from his portrayal of Dr Frankenstein and the Creature in the National Theatre’s Frankenstein.
When you enter the theatre, you are immediately transported into a luxurious wedding set up, with even an order of service awaiting you as you reach your seat. It is clear that something is up, and you find out pretty quickly we are in a dystopian world where censorship controls everything. Without spoiling anything the twist that occurs is one of the best I have seen in a long time. The writing from Sam Holcroft is incredible and reminds me of The Pillowman. There are definitely similar themes that both the plays share.
Miller is incredible in this production; you are hooked to his performance from the moment the production begins. Tanya Reynolds also stars and is incredible as the only female presence within the cast. She is both funny and committed. Geoffrey Streatfeild and Samuel Adewunmi finish the cast off. There is not one single weak link. They are all brilliant and work together to bring Holcroft’s world to life. It is directed by Jeremy Herrin, who has done an equally excellent job.
Without spoiling it, there is not a lot more I can say. Other than I hugely recommend going to see this production while you can. Don’t look up anything in advance! Just come with your brain in gear and enjoy the production.
