Associate Director

Deafinitely Theatre are looking for an Associate Director to work with us on our upcoming touring bi-lingual production, The Promise. 

Associate Director

As Associate Director on the upcoming production of The Promise, you will work closely with the Director, Paula Garfield (Deafinitely Theatre's Artistic Director), supporting the rehearsals of the production.

There will be some preparation work ahead of rehearsals commencing in Birmingham in March 2024, including meetings with the Director, creative and production teams.

The show will open at The Rep, Birmingham before embarking on a UK national tour - with key dates required.

This is a dynamic development role where you will learn from our Artistic Director and develop your own skills as a theatre director.

Job Requirements

  • They are looking for an emerging deaf or hard of hearing theatre director - someone who is keen to develop experience and grow their involvement on a theatre production
  • You do not have to have any previous professional experience as this will be a developmental role where you can learn from and be supported by DT's Artistic Director and Senior Management Team
  • BSL fluency to a minimum of Level 3 or a native signer
  • Particular interest in social impact theatre and touring work
  • A positive team player who is willing to work in collaboration with and learn from various theatre professionals (DT's internal team, director, creatives, stage manager and producing and technical staff etc)
  • Someone who is organised, confident, flexible, calm and approachable
  • This role will require that an Enhanced DBS check is completed prior to the role commencing.

Job Responsibilities

  • Supporting the Director to ensure that the production is fully realised and accessible for deaf and hearing audiences
  • Supporting the Director to ensure that the British Sign Language is performed to a high standard and that deaf culture and the deaf experience is appropriately reflected in the production
  • Assisting in planning the rehearsal process
  • Attending all rehearsals, making and sharing notes as appropriate
  • Attending all preview performances, the nominated press night and other performances as requested
  • Attending all production meetings and other internal planning meetings as required and agreed in advance
  • Contributing to the design process in collaboration with the Director and the creative team
  • Supporting the wellbeing of the company and sharing any concerns as they arise
  • Contributing to the press and marketing campaigns for the production as required
  • Undertaking other duties typical of the role of Associate Director for a production of this scale
