YSWN seeks to provide better opportunities for women and people of minority genders within the music industry, and is working with music and sound industry employers to challenge and change the gender gap.

Trainee Studio Assistant

YSWN has teamed up with the award-winning - AiAi Studios to offer a paid Studio & Events Assistant trainee opportunity.

Supported by Youth Music's Incubator fund, this is a positive action paid trainee opportunity aimed at women and minority gendered people aged 18-25 years old, with applications particularly welcomed from those of the global majority.

The selected trainee will gain real-world experience of working with a busy production studio, seeing what goes into the production of documentaries, podcasts, music and scripted series for high profile clients such as Channel 4, Audible, Google and more.

As well as a fee of £5,000 (2 days/wk over 6 months), they will also have a micro-grant of £500 to develop a personal project.

Tasks may include:

  • Music editing
  • Sound Design
  • Post production sound
  • Assisting on scoring and arranging and music production
  • Research
  • Office administration

They will also receive 10 hours of mentoring from a YSWN associate with experience in the audio technology & music business industry.

Skills / Experience / Attributes

  • Experience in audio/music editing in a DAW such as ProTools, Reaper, Logic Pro X and/or Ableton essential
  • Willingness to learn
  • Interest in / knowledge of
    • Sound design
    • Scoring
    • Film
    • Podcasts
  • Team player
  • Good verbal and written communication skills
  • Self motivated with strong work ethic

Duration: 2 days a week over 6 months totalling 48 days (7.5 hours per day), worked flexibly in agreement with AiAi Studios between October 2023 and April 2024
Fee: £5,000 inclusive of travel expenses
Place of work: AiAi Studios (Remote with an expected 2 x in-person sessions in Leeds and London.)
