Candlelight Concerts will bring Pink Floyd’s music at Southwark Cathedral on the 29th of July. The tentative programme lists songs from the band’s most famous albums, Wish You Were Here, The Dark Side of the Moon and The Wall. Candlelight has become renowned for the mastery of their concerts, and the reviews are a testimony to how powerful their artistic endeavour is. ‘Very impressive’ or ‘Absolutely amazing’ are the common words used to describe the Candlelight experience, and it would make any music lover rush for a ticket, which actually seems to be the case, as more that 3 million people attended their concerts. And then there’s Pink Floyd, a band whose music can transcend the ordinary, the mainstream, the generations and the time itself.

Anyone who has ever listened to Pink Floyd knows just how transcendental their music is, how the mere experience of listening to their music in your room can feel like a trip to a whole new world. Now take that and put it on a string quartet in a candlelit gothic cathedral, and what you get is a truly glorious expression of artistic beauty. As an avid fan of both Pink Floyd and string quartets, I will definitely attend the concert.

The concert bears the promise of astonishment. As it is, Pink Floyd’s music is marked by something so special and so timeless, something that succeeded in being relevant even after all these years. It’s experimental, it’s refined and yet forceful. It’s meaningful, emotional, spiritual, and sometimes it just feels like a journey through existence. And string quartets can reach something that only string quartets can. It’s more than intense, it’s more than superb, it’s just something than can only be experienced, not explained. And a candlelit cathedral, filled with the warm, soft light of hundreds of candles, will create an ethereal and intimate atmosphere verging on the mystical.

All of these combined will turn Southwark Cathedral into a timeless capsule of light and sublime music for the 60 minutes of the concert. If you love music, or if you simply want to get a short break from the hustle of London and get lost (or find yourself) in a moment of superb artistic beauty, then make sure to get a ticket. You may even see Hodge, the cathedral cat, while you’re there. And if this doesn’t convince you to book a ticket, then I don’t know what will!
