Noted: The Piano Guys

Energy, excitement, elation oozes through their music and is utterly infectious.

Noted: The Piano Guys

Despite the appearance of a dynamic duo in their music videos, this fabulous foursome actually consists of pianist Jon Schmidt, cellist Steve Nelson, producer Al Van Der Beek, and videographer Paul Anderson. They merge some of the most recognisable music of the western pop and classical culture, while sometimes incorporating more authentic musical styles and traditions from around the world. From Scottish bagpipes to the Swahili language and African percussion, the diversity of their music is addictive. Delve into their YouTube channel and embark on an epic adventure through Africa, America and Asia, never knowing where you will end up – a concept that has never been more appealing after an abysmally static year.

The most notable theme throughout their music is the sheer enjoyment of these musicians. Warmth radiates from the smiles of Schmidt and Nelson through the screen and encases the listener in a bubble of musical bliss. True smiles of simple happiness. A sad rarity in the competitive battleground industry of instrumental performance, where enjoyment is too often dwarfed by the perpetual obstacles of practice, expectations and perfectionism. Maybe one day the devoted foundations of this struggling industry will take a leaf from the Piano Guys’ Book.

If I had to pick my favourites, they would be Let it go/Vivaldi’s Winter, Kung Fu Panda: Cello Ascends, andThemes from Pirates of the Caribbean. All three are an exhilarating and emotive listen.

If you want to turn a good day into a great day, have a listen.
