What was the title of the activity?
The activity was using a potter’s wheel.
What art form did you try?
I tried pottery and sculpting bowls using a potters wheel.
Why did you take this workshop?
Who taught the event, and what did you learn about this teacher?
The person running the events name was Jerzy Mazur and runs a pottery business and is a very experienced artist.
Did you create any artwork? Describe it and the processes you undertook when you created it:
I created a bowl. I did this by throwing the clay I was given on to the potter’s wheel as instructed, then worked the clay before beginning to make the bowl by molding the clay into a cone and squishing it back into a ball a few times. After that I made a small dent into the centre of the rounded clay on the potter’s wheel and began to make a hole in the centre using that dent as a guide whilst leaving some clay at the bottom of the hole. After this I began to create the initial bowl shape by using a technique called pinching which is when you pinch from the outside of the clay and from the hole you just created and pinch the sides upwards into the shape of a cone and then pinch the sides into a more rounded shape to make it look like a bowl. Next I took a small damp piece of cloth and created a small circular shape in the middle by pinching both ends of it gently and ran the loop I had made in the cloth along the edges of the pot but touching it to the edge and spinning the potters wheel whilst doing so to create a rounded finish to the edges. Finally the man running the tuition session cut the bowl off of the potter’s wheel with a thin piece of wire whilst I was gently pressing down the pedal that controls the potters wheel to make it spin slowly and immediately stopped the wheel as soon as the bowl was no longer attached to the potter’s wheel.
List some new skills or ideas you learnt:
I learned that patience is key when learning something and practice makes perfect as well as how to use a potters wheel, how to work clay on a potter’s wheel and how to make a clay bowl.
Did you enjoy the activity? Why?
I enjoyed the activity as it was interesting to learn a new skill. I created something new and it was interesting to watch as the clay molded with very little pressure.
