Located in Paris, the Louvre is one of the most famous art galleries in the world.
Holding arguably the most renowned painting in the world, The Mona Lisa was painted in 1503 by the famous painter Leonardo DaVinci. Commissioned by Francesco del Giocondo, this painting is believed to be of Lisa Gherardini (his wife) painted in oil paint. However, some believe that it is in fact his mother, Caterina. This is actually one of the most expensive pieces of art in the world.
I visited the Louvre while on holiday in Paris. When I went to see the Mona Lisa it was very busy as it’s a very popular painting. Surprisingly, this painting was actually smaller than I expected, measuring 77cm by 53cm. However, the Louvre holds many other artworks and sculptures.
For example, the well-known Venus de Milo, a sculpture of Venus the goddess of love, is also displayed here. Believed to be sculpted in 150 BC, this sculpture is surprisingly over 6.5 feet tall making it very high.
In addition, another famous statue in The Louvre is the Seated Scribe. Created in ancient Egypt, this sculpture was made from limestone. I find it really interesting how there is a lot of detail in such an old sculpture, like the eyes and even a scribe in his hand.
