Caoimhe was nominated by her teacher for her outstanding drumming in her Rock and Pop qualification. They said that she is 'an accomplished musician confident in her ability and own skin' and that she delivered 'simply an outstanding performance.'
In what ways would you say your Rock and Pop qualification has influenced your artistic achievement, creativity, leadership or progress?
This award has made me feel more motivated to work even harder in my GCSE music and it has influenced me by making me want to practice more for all the instruments I play.
How has participating in a Rock and Pop qualification impacted your artistic skills or career development?
I am currently studying for my Trinity Rock & Pop grade 6 drums exams as well as, now, my grade 3 guitar exams. I am also self-taught in keyboard and bass guitar. I started with my first drum kit aged 2 but this was just for fun. I came back to drumming aged 10. I have completed my grade 2-5 exams in drums and my grade 2 in guitar over the course of the last 4 years. The discipline of practice, interacting with my tutors of playing and the challenge of taking the exams themselves have taught me many different skills with regards to music and the success has given me the confidence to come out of my shell with everyone who I meet and has helped me communicate better in aspects of my school and music academy life.
What's next for you?
When I finish my A-levels I plan to go to college/university to study music further, and in particular the art of drumming, in more depth.
What are your career aims?
To be a professional musician, drumming first as it is my passion, and to help / teach drums and music to others.
Have you got any advice for other young people working towards a Rock and Pop qualification?
I would advise any young person thinking of taking up playing an instrument as a hobby, or a beginner already wanting to succeed in grades, that they should go for it. The decision to practice, study and take the grades in drums, and my other instruments, in 2015 was simply the best decision in my life. The confidence gained by my seeing the improving skills has spread into everything I now do.
