Guthrie has been nominated by parent Nick Fullagar for passing his Grade 5 drums exam with distinction. “This is a boy who is very determined and works very hard to achieve his goals,” says Nick. “This grading was a real turning point. It’s that moment when someone gets it and you see real maturity in their playing.”
“After working on these pieces for more than a year,” says Guthrie, “it was such a rewarding feeling to be awarded a distinction. Trinity exams have helped me feel more comfortable about performing in front of other people. The exams have definitely given me insight into the music world and most certainly have furthered my drumming skills.”
Guthrie’s advice to fellow Trinity students?
Give yourself enough time to prepare for the exam. If you give yourself too little time, you'll be stressed and won't pass with a good grade. Work towards an achievable target such as a merit. Finally, don't overthink it. Just be yourself and play your instrument.
