16-year-old Grace was nominated for TrinityTalent 2020 for her progress in drama. She completed her Musical Theatre qualification digitally due to Covid-19. She attained Grade 7 Distinction in Musical Theatre Solo.
Grace was nominated by teacher Donna-Marie Povey. Donna-Marie said: "In her previous exam, this is a pupil who gained 20/20 for her discussion with the examiner because she works so hard. Not only does she have incredible talent, but she prepares so thoroughly for every exam. The digital process has once again allowed Grace to demonstrate that she is an absolutely outstanding talent. Grace intends to pursue the Trinity College London syllabus right through to Grade 8, a true sign of her commitment and stamina, having progressed with distinctions through the beginner, intermediate and advanced stages of this incredible process."
The Trinity judges said: "Grace has shown outstanding efforts during the pandemic, and despite the challenges, hasn’t stopped achieving. Not only has Grace accomplished a lot, but she’s also demonstrated an ability to have a wider impact on her community in her various roles as ambassador. She appears to have adapted to the challenging climate extremely well."
How has your Trinity qualification influenced your progress with your art?
The Trinity qualifications are amazing! They have helped to improve my performance skills, but they have also helped me develop into the confident, resilient and motivated person I am today. These exams have acted as a great learning experience for me. The detailed examiner feedback after each exam is invaluable as it helps me prioritise what I need to work on so I can continue to improve.
Has taking part in a Trinity qualification helped you to develop wider skills?
The fact that the Trinity Musical Theatre exams require contrasting pieces is very important to my progress. It allows me to gain experience in many different genres, such as the Fosse style in Chicago or the modern feel of Six The Musical. This is a fun challenge as I have to embody these different styles whilst also telling the character’s story, and I feel as though this has improved my communication skills a lot. I also love the freedom of choice I have when selecting the pieces to perform. It allows me to be creative and think outside the box; for example, in one of my exams, I chose to do a monologue from Romeo and Juliet but adapted it to the 21st century whilst keeping the physical text the same.
Please tell us how you found the experience of recording a digital submission for drama
Figuring out the best camera angle and the best lighting was definitely a learning curve, but I found the Trinity website’s advice very useful. I’m really glad I had the chance to do an online exam last year as it allowed me to practise these digital skills because, now more than ever, the creative industry is moving towards self-tapes for auditions. So these skills are becoming more important. Although I thoroughly enjoyed the online exam, I am very much looking forward to being able to perform in front of an audience again as I have missed it very much!
Would you like to tell us anything about the challenges you’ve faced this year, and how you’ve overcome them to achieve your qualification?
With all the uncertainty surrounding my GCSEs, I found that the Trinity exam gave me something to focus on and allowed me to escape and do something I really enjoy.
What are the next steps for you following your qualification?
I‘m really looking forward to performing Grade 8, whether it’s in front of an examiner or online! After that, I would love to pursue a career in acting or maybe law, but whichever career path I decide to take, I know that the confidence and communication skills I have developed through the Trinity exams will help me greatly.
What are your career aims?
I would love to be the main character in a Netflix TV show or perform in the West End. My dream role would be to play Lydia in Beetlejuice or Anne Boleyn in Six The Musical.
Have you got any advice for other young people working towards a Trinity qualification or Arts Award?
My advice would be to have confidence in yourself and most of all, to enjoy the experience!
