Charlotte Taylor | TrinityTalent 2020

17-year-old Charlotte was nominated for TrinityTalent 2020 for her leadership skills in drama. She completed her drama qualification digitally due to Covid-19. She attained Grade 8 distinction in Musical Theatre.

Charlotte was nominated by her parent Kerry Taylor. Kerry said: "Charlotte made the decision that despite COVID 19, she would not put her Trinity College London syllabus work on hold but that she would work to adapt her challenging and diverse suite of Grade 8 performances for digital presentation. Charlotte's dedicated program of 'at home' rehearsals throughout lockdown, played a significant role in encouraging younger sister Sienna to submit a digital entry this year (2020). Charlotte helped Sienna to shape her performance, giving direction, support and above all; heaps of confidence and encouragement."

The Trinity judges said: "We were impressed by the way Charlotte stepped-up to mentor her younger sister throughout lockdown, showing great ability in being a mentor and sharing her art skills. What a great role model."

How has your Trinity qualification influenced your leadership skills with your art?

Having started the Trinity exams process when I was around nine-years-old, I am thrilled to have now completed my Grade 8 Musical Theatre exam with a distinction. I am convinced that Trinity exams have built a foundation for my passion and interest within the Musical Theatre industry. They have helped me with my ability to communicate using all three disciplines, boosting my confidence and allowing me to work on my technique. After completing my qualification, I actively supported my sister in completing her first Trinity exam and guided her through learning lines and helping create choreography, which helped me discover my love of teaching and sharing my passion with others. She gained a distinction for her Grade 4 Musical Theatre exam.

Has taking part in a Trinity qualification helped you to develop wider skills?

The Trinity exams helped me develop skills that enabled me to prepare for an audition at LIPA Sixth Form College, where I was offered a place to study full-time musical theatre. It has also allowed me to widen my repertoire of songs, monologues and gain more knowledge of the arts, which has been influential when actively auditioning for TV and film. Beyond theatre, it has taught me life skills, such as communicating with others and utilising my voice.

Please tell us how you found the experience of recording a digital submission for drama

This year’s Trinity examination has been completely different digitally throughout lockdown. I have enjoyed this experience as it enabled me to think about the performance’s production side, such as setting up the camera, music and lighting. I did miss the interaction of showcasing to others in person but would hugely recommend others to participate online.

Would you like to tell us anything about your personal circumstances or challenges you’ve faced this year, and how you’ve overcome them to achieve your Trinity qualification?

Throughout lockdown, my Trinity exam gave me something to focus on during the holidays. It kept me motivated as I continued to practice my pieces and choreograph dances. This experience made me grow as a performer as I was able to develop my creativity.

What are the next steps for you following your qualification?

I have now completed my final Musical Theatre exam. I would love to broaden my learning within the Trinity umbrella to further complete my Speech and Drama qualification and perhaps a Trinity Diploma further down the line.

What are your career aims?

I am currently studying full-time Musical Theatre at LIPA Sixth Form College in Liverpool. I will soon attend auditions for university, where I hope to achieve a BA Hons in Musical Theatre. I hope to progress into the theatre industry to fulfil my passion and dream professionally, and I believe Trinity has set me on the right course to do this.

Have you got any advice for other young people working towards a Trinity qualification or Arts Award?

My advice to anyone passionate about any Trinity qualification is to choose pieces you enjoy and connect with. This makes it easier to devote your spare time to it and choose contrasting pieces to show the examiner that you can portray a variety of characters. Research into the chosen pieces/musical as it is essential for high standard performance. It enables you to have a deeper understanding of context, and your characters aims and intentions. Most importantly, have fun!
