Lydia was nominated by her teacher for her achievements with the Euphonium in her Classical and Jazz qualification. They said 'Lydia is dedicated to her practise and this is a testament to the progress that she has made. She absorbs new techniques quickly, always comes prepared to lessons and goes above and beyond what is expected. She plays lyrically and with a good developing technique. She interprets music and style exceptionally well.'
In what ways would you say your Classical and Jazz qualification has influenced your artistic achievement, creativity, leadership or progress?
Achieving a Distinction at grade 8 has made me more confident in my self as a musician. Preparing for the exam took hard work, dedication and lots of practice. The exam also gave me the opportunity to explore different types of music that I wouldn’t usually play, which has helped to improve my technique massively. I am extremely proud of the progress that I have made.
How has participating in a Classical and Jazz qualification impacted your artistic skills or career development?
Playing an instrument has taught me the importance of perseverance and dedication. I originally played the trumpet for 5 years, but then I got braces, and was no longer able to play. Despite the challenges, I started playing the Euphonium, and in only 3 years, achieved grade 8, proving that nothing is impossible if you work hard enough. As well as this, I have made some incredible friends that I would never have met if I didn’t play an instrument.
What's next for you?
I am hoping to get a diploma, and continue to make progress. I am also currently working towards sitting a grade 5 cello exam.
What are your career aims?
I am extremely interested in science, and hope to pursue a career in chemistry, but I that know whatever I choose to do, music will always be a huge part of my life.
Have you got any advice for other young people working towards a Classical and Jazz qualification?
Enjoy what it is that you do, that’s the most important thing. And remember to never stop trying to achieve your goals.
