Voicebox: Activism

Activism

Never before have so many issues been championed at once. The environment; equal rights for ethnic minorities and LGBTQ+; an end to class discrimination and access to opportunities for the disabled. It's been over 100 years since women in the UK were first allowed to vote and the feminist fight for gender equality still continues. Refugees in desperate need of help and compassion are instead treated as criminals. Activism is integral to making these issues mainstream and bringing about much needed change. We at Voice want to shine a light on these movements, and specifically how you are campaigning for change. Big or small, global or personal, we can all make a difference, and we want to hear your stories. So whether you're at the forefront of an international movement, or you've just decided to cut down on plastic, share your story and help inspire others to make the world a brighter place!

No, people with invisible illnesses aren't trying to steal parking spaces

    by Mary Strickson Contributor

There seems to be a misguided belief that people with autism or mental health difficulties want to cheat the system by getting a blue badge. I've never heard anything so laughable.

Beyond ‘Curious Incident’, New Narratives of Autism by David Hartley

    by Nici West Voice Team

There’s a saying in the autism community: “If you’ve met one person with autism, you’ve met one person with autism.” There’s a serious humour at the heart of it, a wilful contradiction of logic spoken with an eyebrow raised that asks for change. It speaks to the frustration felt by autistic individuals who have seen the story of their identity told through harmful medical hypothesising, misguided neurotypical guesswork and deeply entrenched stereotyping – and usually by people who are not autistic.

Brutal start for Ontario’s new right wing Tory austerity regime

    by Disabled People Against Cuts

After fifteen years of implementing a stealthy and fake progressive brand of neoliberal austerity, the Liberal Party has been driven out of office in Ontario. The recent Provincial Election led to the taking of power by a rabid right wing Tory regime, headed by boorish populist multi millionaire, Doug Ford.
