The performances were part of the Body of work project which is a requirement of the MA Dance Movement Psychotherapy course by the University of Derby. The majority of the performances had the aim of expressing emotions and challenges that people with mental health issues have to deal with.
I thoroughly enjoyed all 6 of the performances as I thought they were all every creative and unique. The way the performers used movement to create meaningful stories was amazing and how they used the freedom of dance to portray something as serious as mental health, abuse and autism. Also I thought that the way the lighting and imagery was used in the performance was extremely effective and added tension to each piece. There were moments during some of the performances where there was no music used this was effective because it let the audience focus on the movement the performer was making and also helps them understand the concept of the piece. I would definitely recommend seeing something like the MA performances to anyone interesting in contemporary dance or dance psychotherapy as they open up a different side to dance.
Brilliant review! Are there any pictures from the event?
