We Do What We Can short film review

Here is a short film review on the BFI film 'We Do What We Can'

I watched the short film We Do What We Can.

This film really reflected on the beauty and negativity of life and nature, beginning with beautiful, bright long shots of landscapes and tranquility and ending on a dark scene with people and no landscape to be seen.

I loved the landscaping of the film and the voiced over dialogue was very insightful, however I feel that some of it didn’t match with the visuals and I was quite confused as to what was going on - particularly at the end of the film. I did however like the meaning generated by trying to enjoy life as it is and still dream and be positive even when life is treating you badly.

I loved the use of their native African language to show their heritage and backstory but it was interesting how that changed to English at the end - it could be indicating their new change and possibly they live in an English-speaking country now.

I feel that this story looks at the proper meaning of life and has many spiritual connotations with people helping them (from out of the blue) and when she was in pain giving birth people helped her. It could be that at the end of the film them partaking in a ritual with their baby could be their way of starting over and gaining a new life for themselves.
