Just in case you didn’t get the memo, it’s that time of year. Again! And leave it to total 80s legend Limahl to prick the ears of those herald angels, and anyone else who’s listening, with this total banger of a Christmas tune.
Hark, it’s ‘One Wish For Christmas’! And the Kajagoogoo front man doesn’t disappoint in his homage to London at Christmas. Come on a feel-good tour of Limahl’s beloved London Town as we marvel at the Christmas Tree in Trafalgar Square, take in a West End show, down cocktails in Mayfair, press our noses against Selfridge’s glittering windows, take a spin on the London Eye and listen out for Big Ben’s knowing chimes. It’s all there, with sleigh bells on top, in Limahl’s moreish addition to the Christmas song oeuvre.
The ‘Too Shy’ and ‘Neverending Story’ singer first got the Christmas song bug eight years ago but, you know how it is, things got in the way. Then, you know, Covid.
“I was very happy with the song but, this year during Covid, I was thinking about the lyrics and how they have more poignancy because they talk about the many things we're all unable to do,”
Limahl explains. “With all the extra time in lockdown to be creative and as it’s been eight years since we first wrote it, we decided to revisit the production.”
And by ‘we’ he means co-writer and jazz great Jon Nickoll plus the producer behind East 17’s ‘Stay Another Day’, Ian Curnow. It’s what is known in the business as a ‘winning combination’, and there’s a video – filmed in Watford’s historic Palace Theatre – to complete the festive bundle.
‘One Wish For Christmas’ is the end-of-year gift that keeps on giving, especially if you press ‘repeat’.
