Yes, yes I know, the whole world and their wife has an obsession with the Mexican surrealist painter. The amount of phone cases that have been sold with her face on it, the amount of tattoos of her work - it’s been done!
But for good reason. Frida was one of the most successful female painters to ever exist, and her expression of mental health, queerness, chronic pain, class and gender was WAY ahead of its time.
Suffering an incredibly unfortunate amount of health problems throughout her life (including the fallout of a bus crash in which her pelvis was completely destroyed), Khalo turned to art and painting as a way to cope with being bed bound. She continued to suffer from complications from this accident for the rest of her life, and instead of shying away from her feelings about her disabilities, she explored and expressed them through her art.
I really recommend looking her up on Google images, reading about her life and looking at all the paintings she created. She proves time and again that beauty can come forth from pain, and I find her endlessly inspirational.
