Shakespeare Day at my School

What my thoughts are on Shakespeare Day at my Senior School

Shakespeare Day at my School

What Happened

On the 2nd of December 2019 I watched a performance of A Midsummer Nights Dream for my school's Shakespeare Day. It was performed by the Rubbish Shakespeare Company. It does live up to its name (just being honest). It was meant to be some laid back silly comedy. This is effective for the type of play because it is a fact that A Midsummer Nights Dream is a comedy in fact.

They made it seem like a Year 7 Drama project. It is art though. All drama is art no matter how weird it is.

The Plot (in summary)

Lets set the scene The play opens in Athens with Hermia who is in love with Lysander, resistant to her father's demand that she fall in love with Demetrius, whom he has arranged for her to marry. Helena, Hermia's best friend, loves Demetrius, who broke up with her to be with Hermia. Helena is obsessed with him. Hermia and Lysander agreed to run into the woods in the dead of night and be in love forever alone. Demetrius finds out about their plan and runs into the woods too. Helena then runs after Demetrius.

In a parallel plot line, Oberon, king of the fairies, and Titania, his queen, have come to the forest outside Athens. Titania tells Oberon that she plans to stay there until she has attended Theseus and Hippolyta's wedding. Oberon and Titania are estranged because Titania refuses to give her human child to Oberon for use as his "knight" or "henchman", since the child's mother was one of Titania's worshippers. Oberon seeks to punish Titania's disobedience. He calls upon Puck to help him concoct a magical juice derived from a flower which turns from white to purple when struck by Cupid's arrow. When the concoction is applied to the eyelids of a sleeping person, that person, upon waking, falls in love with the first living thing they perceive. He instructs Puck to retrieve the flower with the hope that he might make Titania fall in love with an animal of the forest and thereby shame her into giving up the little boy.

What I Think About The Play

I think this play is really strange because it is about fairies and love flowers. This also makes it a great show too.
