Direct Art Action - Sean Barton

Local gallery in Sutton Coldfield

Direct Art Action - Sean Barton

On Thursday 7th November 2019 we went to Direct Art Action gallery in Sutton Coldfield. We went there and walked around, looked at the art and took photos. Then I picked two pieces to analyse and sat there and analysed them. These were from local artists. We chose a photography piece by Fran Vere about Birmingham Library and another piece by James ware which was a charcoal piece of a female body. Then we also spoke to the owner/curator of the gallery and asked him some questions for example to find out what training he had done and why he was interested in art.

The art forms I have seen were photography, painting, pencil, 3D like a fridge and concrete sculpture. There was lots of different art forms there. I have not been to an art gallery before but it similar to art and design in school because I took that GCSE so I have done image analysis before where you look at the different things like colour and shape. I haven’t interviewed anyone like that before.

There were some abstract items, the most shocking was the fridge with insulation and a pipe coming out of it. I didn’t think that was art but it would’ve been good to have known the message and why the artist chose to put it in the gallery.

In my opinion the thing I think was best was the wooden sculpture because it was unique and a lot more skill used and more interesting. I prefer 3D things but ones that look like they’ve been made so I didn’t like the fridge and cuddly toys as much because it didn’t look as much skill as making things out of materials like wood. I didn’t like the 3D art in the cages as it was quite dark and depressing and not my.

In my opinion I have learnt there is a large variety of what you can call art. For example the fridge and people might interpret it in different ways. The idea that anything created can be called art and that nothing is necessarily perfect. Everyone might interpret your art differently but if you put it in a gallery you know that’s not what everyone will always like it.

Love this. Do you think artists are brave to put their work on display, knowing it will be interpreted differently?
