This is a brief overview of an an animation workshop that I went to run by the BBFC.

Animation workshop with the BBFC -11th November 2019

What was the title of the activity?

Animation workshop with the BBFC  11th November 2019.

What art form did you try?

Animation, storyboard planning and sketching out.

Why did you take this workshop?

I am interested in model scenery making and a lot of model scenery making is created for animation and animated films.

Who taught the event, and what did you learn about this teacher?

The event was taught by the BBFC (which stands for British Board of Film Classification), there were a few people teaching and this was because they were trying to cover different things.  They were focussing upon how animation is classified and how certain things lead to the award of PG or U.  I didn’t learn much about the people taking the event as they had a set list of information that they seemed to read from and this didn’t allow for much/many questions from the audience.

Did you create any artwork? Describe it and the processes you undertook when you created it:

We had the chance to plan a simple story or at least build upon our ideas and I thought about how I would build a set to allow the telling of simple story about a girl walking home from school and getting lost because the street she normally walked down had disappeared and how she had to think of another way to get home.  I had to think about how I would tell the story, what age range it would be best suited for, whether or not a street disappearing would be frightening and how this might make little children feel.  I had to think about the design of my set, how easy it would be to put the street in and take it out without ruining the rest of the set and how I could find another way home for the girl.  I had to make sure that when I was designing my set that there was continuity, so that it ‘looked right’ no matter if you looked from the front or the side of the set.

I had to draw some simple designs and simple storyboard for my story.

List some new skills or ideas you learned:

I had not thought about how sets could be added to or large items removed before and not have to result in building a whole new set, so this was interesting.  I hadn’t thought before about how to decide if something was suitable for young children or not, and although this isn’t part of my goals for my silver arts award it was very interesting and made me think about how scenery can be designed to be dark and scary or light and ‘safe’.

Did you enjoy the activity? Why?

Yes I enjoyed this activity, as I learnt some new ideas and had chance to hear ideas from others who also attended the workshop.

I have just started my silver arts award, focussing upon three dimensional work and particularly scenery and set making in detail, along the lines of set making used in animation.

We need your help supporting young creatives

it sounds as if you learned loads, although it's a shame that you weren't able to learn much about your teachers because of their teaching style
