I went to SPACE SHIFTERS ARTS EXHIBITION

Hello!

I am currently working on my arts award Silver, and here, I will share my review on when I went to Space Shifters, an Arts Exhibition in London. I hope you enjoy!

I went to SPACE SHIFTERS ARTS EXHIBITION

For my second review me and Kaitlin went to an exhibition at the Southbank Centre called “Space Shifters”. Space Shifters is an exhibition that brings together lots of different artwork and sculptures that were made in Los Angeles during the 1960s – a period that saw many artists experiment with unconventional materials and processes. The exhibits are supposed to engage with you in a way that acts on the whole body, and have effects that dazzle, disorientate and prompt further reflection.

When I first entered the exhibition, I was immediately amazed at the amazing exhibits that were displayed. The first thing I noticed was an amazing sculpture by Jeppe Hein. It was two large mirrored panels at right angles to one another, and as well as reflecting the surrounding environment, each mirror also reflects its twin. I found the overall effect of this absolutely mesmerising, and it really made me think about all the precise work that would’ve gone into it.

One of the things I liked most about the event was the way that the pieces of art played with your mind and senses. While looking at them I really reflected on how much precise work and thought must have gone into each exhibit to create the desired effect. Thinking about it now, I really wouldn’t change anything about the museum, as there was a perfect mixture of general exhibits and exhibits that you could interact with and touch, which made the experience a lot more enjoyable.

One of the exhibits that I particularly liked was this one by Roni Horn. I really liked it because When you first see it, it looks remarkably like a glistening pool of water. However, when you look closer, you realise that it is expertly moulded glass that is made to create the illusion of water. Even though it was cool, you couldn’t touch it as it would spoil the effect, but If you could, that would’ve been amazing too.

I think by far the most impressive exhibit was the main exhibit. It is a room filled with engine oil, leaving only a narrow passage way through the centre, and when you go in, it really messes with your senses and brain. We had to queue an hour for this one, as you went in on your own, but it was worth it!

Overall, I absolutely loved the whole experience, and I would recommend going if it is ever on again. The artwork was so interesting and mind bending, and I think if I ever try sculptural or illusion art work, this exhibit will definitely inspire me.

Sounds like a great experience Maisie! The mirrored structure & engine oil exhibits sound really exciting. I hope you can keep on finding great places to visit.
