War and Conflict, Poetry and Peace

Exhibition/show

I went to an exhibition called  War and Conflict, Poetry and Peace. It was at the Willow art gallery in Oswestry

I chose to attend this exhibition because it looked interesting because it was part of a celebration to remember 100 years since the end of World war 1 and the death of our local poet Wilfred Owen.

I saw lots of artwork of all different media on theme of war. The main exhibitor was Eileen Harrisson. Eileen Harrisson is a textile artist. She creates large pictures. She uses thread to sketch and she makes landscapes and collages.

The gallery was crammed with all sorts of artworks round every corner there were surprises there even was a resident artist working on a huge oil painting. In the window there hundreds of red knitted poppies. The war exhibition took up most of the room. As well as textile art there was also painting  sketches and photos.

My personal favourites where three works of art

The first one was an acrylic painting ‘Remembering’  by Mike Laxton. there were army figures in the background made up of dark colours and in the  the centre was an old  ex soldier in red with red poppies painted to look like they were falling out the frame

The second one was futility by Eileen Harrisson it was a mixed media textile on linen base using silk painted fabrics and threads and hand stitching  to create a woodland landscape. It was extremely detailed and looked like a painting from a distance until you looked close up and see the individual  stitches

The third one is Continuum also by Eileen Harrisson. It was a collage made up of over twenty different art pieces overlapping using many different techniques for example painting embroidery silk screen printing also pieces of broken glass. With a predominant background colour of red. Alongside she had written a poem about it.

I had not released before how interesting textile art could be and how it can give texture and dimension i was amazed at how detailed and effective it could be

The paintings were all unique and some were very abstract. I found it was amazing how many ways different artists painted  and how they used colour.

I really enjoyed experience because  there was so much to look at. There was art at every corner. all the artworks were so detailed and every time i looked closely i would spot new details that i hadn't noticed before. i found it incredibly interesting how the different artists had used different styles and used different  media. I also enjoyed watching the resident artist painting it was fascinating how he used the different colours. I could have watched him  all day

Hi Susanna! Just to let you know, I've used one of the fantastic images in your article as the header image.

War and poetry is such a good theme for an exhibition. Was is solely focused on WWI or were there works of art about other wars? Did they show anything about Wilfred Owen?

    Hello
Thank you for doing the header image.
The exhibition was mainly on World War 1 but there were many pieces on Wilfred Owen
including paintings illustrating some of his poems.
    Thanks again
