Cake International

looking at the exhibition

Cake International

Part C Exhibition/show Date: 02/11/2018

What was the title of the exhibition/show?

Cake International

Why did you choose to attend this exhibition/show?

I attended the exhibition to learn more about sugar craft and be inspired.

Who were the artists and what did they create?

The artists were Phil and Christine and they made a sticky toffee cake. I also saw work by Emma Jayne and Lara Mason.

What did you see?

I saw a cake of Harry and Megan (by Lara Mason) and a cake of the trapeze artist from the greatest showman (by Emma Jayne).

What were your first impressions?

I thought the layout was better than the cake and bake show but I thought the stages were too close because the sound interfered with each stage show. You could not see all the cakes because some were being judged and it had been cordoned off. I preferred this to the Cake and Bake show because it focused more on cakes so there were less distractions, like other foods such as cheeses and olives.  The layout made it less crowded.

Did you find anything particularly interesting to your personally?

I found the demonstrations that Phil and Christen did interesting and I want to give it a go.  Also I learnt how to make a bear and an elf.  Doing a workshop was good as I learned new things and could try things out.

What did you learn which will help you to achieve your challenge?

My goal to learn about sugar craft was helped because I could see lots of different designs for ideas.  It gives me an idea of how an exhibition works. Also, I learned some specific things like:

  1. A good way to get colour off your hands is use white fondant icing (like Renshaw) and rub it in your hands.  This way you don’t mix the colours.
  2. I learned having a wet sponge on the table while working is a good idea for sticking things, or a cup of water would work.
  3. When baking and making a toffee sauce you must warm up the cream before you add it to the sugar.
  4. Also, you can use plain flour and add your own baking powder because self raising flour can deteriorate over time.

Did you enjoy the experience overall? Why?

Yes I did enjoy the experience because it was very interesting to see all the different styles of cakes and I learnt new skills, such as modelling.

I think it was a good exhibition, with free workshops.  The stage demonstrations were also good.  I would go again.
