Silent Faces’ play about three sailors and two explorers who find themselves battling storms and mental health issues is occasionally touching, but otherwise failed to make me feel much at all. With no dialogue I found there was little to hold my interest and, honestly, was slightly bored at times.
The cast are all endearing and perform well, using good facial expressions - essential with no speech - and I quite liked the breaking of the 4th wall, but the piece itself felt repetitive and drawn out to me. I could tell that everything was meant to be a metaphor, but I struggled to work out what some of it was meant to be a metaphor for. One of them was explained towards the end, but I feel if you have to explain, perhaps it isn’t shown clearly enough in the first place.
There are sweet elements, which clearly show the importance of supporting each other through mental health issues, but overall I just wasn’t convinced by the show. I’m a huge advocate for any and all mental health awareness, and I can see the show is trying to do something really important, but it just didn’t quite work for me.
A Clown Show About Rain is on at 13:40 at Pleasance Dome until August 27th, excluding the 13th and 20th. For more information and to purchase tickets, visit the EdFringe website.
