Sass, Sex and Surrealness- King Sammy Silver

‘The name on everybody’s lips is DEFINITELY Sammy..

Sass, Sex and Surrealness- King Sammy Silver

As part of our HLF funded ‘Set Me Free’ project, we have been learning about the changes in the LGBT community since the UK decriminalised homosexuality in 1967. We wanted to support our local queer artists who reflect current attitudes within the LGBT community and, thanks to HLF, we got to see the clever, funny, contemporary drag act that is King Sammy Silver perform his one- man show Sass, Sex and Surrealness which is part of the 2018 Brighton Fringe.

Sammy himself is a young, confident and articulate performer who embodies the two characters of the narcissistic, fame- hungry King Sammy Silver and his long- suffering sensible twin sister Sally. He uses a clever combination film clips, make- up, slick costume changes and very relatable interactions “get a job Sammy!” that actually made us forget that they are the same person.

The 1 hour show takes you on King Sammy Silver’s journey of gender and sexual realisation featuring themes of employment, family, relationships (inc. a hilarious Grindr Batman and Robin date situation- thanks to support from King Alexander The Great ) and identity within the LGBT community. The audience are treated to various points in Sammy’s life via a polished combinations of live singing, 90’s pop song classics, fierce lip-syncing, dance, film, voiceover, stand- up comedy, song parodies and equal amounts of audience interaction greatly encouraged by Sammy- we laughed, cheered and bopped in our seats a lot!

The audience were engaged throughout laughing at the jokes and interested by what he had to say. Sammy kept the atmosphere light- hearted, using his mix of art forms to drive home King Sammy’s confusion at every- day life and Sally’s exasperation.

Sammy was real and thought provoking. We could relate to his experience of terrible job interviews, practicing safe sex and forgetting a siblings birthday (even though she's his twin…). He made us laugh but also think about our own habits. He shared with us some perspective on social media ‘likes’ counting for our self- worth but still keeping the air light with funny songs and energetic dancing.

The audience gets to see Sammy being vulnerable. He is honest about his own evolving sense of self and sexuality expressed through a very funny, repetitive song ‘mum and dad sit down, I have something to say…’  relatable to those who have experienced this in their own lives, and special because we shared in the humour of what could be a difficult thing to share. He was honest with the crowd by sharing thoughts on not needing surgery to be transgender and advice to accept who you are inspired us.

The vulnerabilities added to the likability of Sammy and was met with loud appreciation from the crowd. He continues to be his best personal cheerleader empowering himself through songs about his quarter- life crisis and taking ownership over his flaws- which is why we love King Sammy!

We really enjoyed the performance. The wonderful embellishment of top hats and sequins perfected this well- prepared drag show. It was funny, heart- warming and current. It was a fun show that made us feel good.

... I thought I did this through the Blueprint22 account! Why does it say my name? The young people came up with the content for this review- I am merely the scribe!
