I am quite interested in politics as a subject, so already I was sold. The basic plot line is of the true story about Frost, the reporter, who conducts a series of interviews with the controversial American President, Richard Nixon. I was completely unaware of the story before seeing the play, but I found that this did not matter as a lot is explained throughout the play. The play is excellent and interesting with an exciting plot and is a watch for anyone interested in the subject. However, not everyone is into politics which might put some people off but really I feel that the plot is good enough to captivate most people, which is a sign of a good play.
The stage was set-up very well to make the stage feel like a recording studio with a massive 360 overhead screen and dozens of lights behind the screen. At the front of the stage was an old fashion television camera, nodding to the time the play is set in. Even more impressive was that the camera was filming live and the film was being projected on to the big screen overhead making the play easy to view from all angles and making it feel as if you were actually watching it back in the day on TV.
The play was mainly told through the narration of a researcher on Frost's team and a General working for Nixon. Whilst the general feel of Peter Morgan's play was quite serious there was often bits of well placed humour which did not feel at all out of place. The acting was impressive. I particularly enjoyed Jonathan Hyde's (Richard Nixon) performance because he managed to keep the seriousness and authority of a president as well as being funny and comedic at times. He really managed to convey lots of aspects of his personality and we saw the man behind the disgraced president.
In summary, I would recommend this play to anyone who is interested in politics or American history. But mainly just to people who want to see a good entertaining play as it is certainly both of those.
I'm glad you enjoyed this Alfie. It sounds like it was set-up in a great immersive way!
