Dance to the Music

I chose to attend this event because I love dancing and watching people dance makes me smile. Also there were people there I love and who inspire me in many ways.

I saw dances from different points in history, starting in the twenties and ending up in 2018.

The artists who created dance routines were Kristina Rihanoff, Robin Windsor, Oxana Platero, Jonathan Platero and others.

I felt very excited and a bit nervous to see what the amazing dancers came up with, but when the dusty red curtains opened and I saw the opening positions of the dancers on stage, I looked forward to seeing the dances.  As I went into the actual theatre, it was packed with loads of people which made me think it would be really good.  When the curtains opened, the stage looked really big and empty.  It was dark and they used spotlights to illuminate each dancer which made the dancers really stand out and the loud, fast music made it feel like something extraordinary was beginning.

I found the dances in the different years were influenced by the songs and artists and I very much liked the 1970s & 1980s.  I enjoyed Kristina’s work with Robin - they did lots of twists and jumps, and flicks and kicks in the 80s hip hop numbers.  It added a real energy to the dance and the jumps added height which made the dance more interesting because it wasn’t all on the ground.  As a dancer, I like to dance in the style of the 80s, which I learned from watching this, and it let me see more moves I could add to the routines I already have.

I learnt about the history of dance, different dances over time and the way they evolved.  I thought about how the art of dance and drama are very different to art like paintings and sculptors.  It made me think about how everything - the style of the dance but also the speed, the music, the costumes and even the shoes - were very different to now.  I also realised that dance as an art form evolves much faster than other art forms - in twenty years the style of dance that is popular changes hugely while painting and textile art are slower to change.

I enjoyed it very much and thought that the dancers were excellent and I learnt a bit about the music, dance and styles of many years.  I liked seeing the background to the music we have today and the inspiration for modern dance moves from dance in the last 100 years.
