Irving Penn Photography Exhibition

“A good photograph is one that communicates a fact, touches the heart and leaves the viewer a changed person for having seen it. It is, in a word, effective.”

Irving Penn Photography Exhibition

On Saturday 13th January 2018, my dad took me to an Irving Pen photography exhibition at the Grand Palais in Paris. The year before, I had seen the exhibition 'The Radical Eye' in London for my Bronze Arts Award. The exhibition in London was a collection of black and white photographs, including some of Penn's work. His pictures really inspired me, which is why I was so excited to see more of his work in Paris. The exhibition was split into 11 rooms, all of which contained a different collection of his photographs. These included: Cigarettes (1972), In Vogue (1957-1961) and Classic Portraits (1948-1962).

Overall, the exhibition was very inspirational and every photo was worth looking at. The first thing I liked about the exhibition was the layout. I really liked how the different 'sections' of phtographs were in separate rooms, because you could see a collection of photographs in the same collection/with a similar style all at once and compare them. Secondly, I loved the photographs themselves. My favourite collections were: Cigarettes and In Vogue. I loved them because they were really original and I'd never seenanything like them before. I especially loved the photo 'Black and White Fashion with Handbag'.

I would definitely recommend this exhibition as I learnt a lot from it, such as how many different effects you can create using Black and White and that you can create amazing photos using everyday items such as cigarettes or wine glasses.
