Guitar lesson with GFW Music Lessons

A review of a specific lesson, where I was learning a glam punk song and techniques to add to my own music creations.

Guitar lesson with GFW Music Lessons

For this lesson I was learning a glam punk song: Underwater World, by Hanoi Rocks. We listened to the song first and talked about the style, performance and techniques. Guy had to rewrite the tab he had (the guitar music), as it was incorrect. Guy showed me the techniques and I then practiced playing the song section by section. We kept reviewing and talking about the song, and eventually I could play the whole thing.

I took the lesson to improve my guitar playing and to learn a new song. This is a song by a band I am influenced by and in the glam punk style that I like, and that my own music is written in.

Guy Frazer-Wright is my guitar teacher. Guy studied music at college and performs in a band. He plays the electric guitar, acoustic guitar, bass and ukulele. Guy qualified as a music teacher and teaches in schools, as well as running independent lessons as GFW Music Lessons.

I learnt how to play Underwater World. I learnt the techniques needed and practiced these, and then worked up to playing the song right through. I learnt the song on guitar, and was then able to add my own style and performance tactics to it.

Some new skills I learnt:
Hammer-ons
Pull-offs
Tapping

Tapping in particular is difficult as you have to press your fingers hard on the frets. It gives an 80s sound, which I like, and I will try this now in my own songs.

I also learnt that the tabs you find online are not always correct!

Guy knows lots about music and so the session was full of interesting information. I could play some parts already, which felt good, but I also learnt new skills and got to practice and have feedback. This particular song is fun to play as a guitarist, because it uses so many techniques which are really effective.
