Canadian comic John Hastings is back with another hour of observational and bowel based humour, presenting the case that love starts in a toilet.
The softly spoken former vegan talks us through many of the more awkward encounters of his life, including his enema trauma as a child and a racially charged encounter in America. While it was all amusing, I don't know if it was necessarily funny.
Hastings is a bit of a raconteur, able to demand the attention of the audience as he regals us with one of his observational musings. In that moment it will appear funny, but immediately afterwards, composure is regained and you're left waiting for the next crescendo. The laughs came very much in peaks and troughs.
The show was both hindered, improved, and hindered again by the presence of some highly obnoxious drunks. What started as some mildly entertaining heckling, with John rolling with the punches and successfully delivering "zinger" comebacks, their persistence had a noticeable impact on the mood of the audience and the show as a whole.
Hastings is an exceptionally competent comedian and I've thoroughly enjoyed his stuff in the past. Maybe it was just a bad night, or the audience put him of - I can't overstate how disruptive some of them were - but Audacity left me wanting.
