Lucy - Panic at the Disco, This is Gospel

This is one of my favourite videos. It's pretty dark but the visuals are amazing.

Lucy - Panic at the Disco, This is Gospel

Review: This Is Gospel - Panic! At The Disco

The Plot

The video shows the protagonist on an operating table and surgeons are performing on him. It then shows him being given oxygen right before his surgery. Then they start to operate and he sits up and starts screaming his song whilst he's being restrained. This scene is quite physical and is choreographed to look like a proper struggle. He is then anaethsetised and dressed in a suit and nailed into a wooden coffin. It then shows the coffin filling up with water but then he breaks out and we see the water going everywhere. He's then restrained by the surgeons with rope but he tries break free. This coincides with the rousing chorus. Eventually he is pictured going toward the light and the video ends.

Cinematography

The shot's are very intimate and close to the subject for maximum impact. It is show very narrowly and we really only see his figure throughout the video. For the most part it is shot head-on but for the more emotive scenes the camera pans back and we get a more dynamic angle.

Themes and meanings

The video depicts a lot of morbid imagery and makes reference to the struggle humanity faces with death. He is shown struggling against the people trying to sedate him and I see this as a reference to him struggling against his own demons and those who seek to oppress him. My interpretation of the meaning is the struggle between life and death.

Personal Feedback

In my opinion, this song (and video) can speak to many people on a visceral level. The passionate intensity shown by the lead singer, Brendon Urie, is a kind that is rarely seen and is reflected well in both his music and the visuals to accompany it. Panic! has a very varied style, with songs like 'Death of a Bachelor' - and many of their other tracks have a very old-fashioned vibe, whereas this song has a much more contemporary style.
