After a lot of research, I decided to go and visit the Royal Academy of Arts' Surface Cutting exhibition in London. I was quite curious to see what it was, as I had never heard of it. I asked my Dad what it was and he told me that it was a bit like linocut. I had done lino cut before so I made a picture in my head of what they would look like.
I looked into surface cutting and it told me that it could also be done with lasers. The exhibition would include many types of printing and…well…surface cutting! This would include hand-printed traditional Japanese woodblock and laser cutting.
Woodblock printing was also used in China for centuries to print books. Although this is similar to woodcut, it uses water-based inks instead of oil-based ones. It provides a large range of bright colours and transparency. Laser cutting is similar to linocut, but the laser gives an extremely precise cut and is used to cut many different materials.
There were a lot of work on display, and each piece was given a price and was for sale. The artists included: Eileen Cooper, Grayson Perry, Stephen Chambers, Vanessa Jackson, Michael Sandle, Martin Groß, Sara Lee, Declan Jenkins, Nana Shiomi, Pru Ainslie, Katsutoshi Yuasa, Pine Feroda, Isabel Rock, Hen Coleman, Mark Hampson, Jonathan Ashworth and Tom Hammick.
So, on Monday 13th February 2017, during half term, my Dad and I attended the Surface Cutting exhibition. When we got there I was amazed by the enchanting works that surrounded me.

My visit to the Royal Academy of Arts Exhibition.
What an inspiring piece! Lino Cutting is certainly a skillful practise, and to see it in different styles of artwork is very interesting to see. Glad you had a great time :-)
