Utterly, utterly bizarre, in a good way

Uberloon

The problem with getting old is that you soon lose touch with the new acts. I know I will get mocked by that statement, but it's true. Ask me 6 years ago who the people were performing at Latitude and I could have given you an opinion on maybe 70% of the people performing. This year, outside of the comedy tent, I recognise 14 names, and half of those are only in passing reference. I feel very out of touch.

IN response to this, I decided the best thing to do would be to get in among those more knowledgeable, and amble around dipping in and out until something catches my attention.

It was in the Lavish, on the Bedroom stage that something caught my attention.

Uberbloon.

It was an utterly utterly bizarre performance. Three men, dressed in wax cotton, one in a straw hat, playing an eclectic mix of instruments that range from the banjo to an accordion to a vibraphone. They were dressed in wax cotton clothing; brown trousers, orange shirts, brown waistcoats and a purple tie to complete the look.

At one point they left the stage to perform on the ground, in front of their sofa slobbing audience. Not that obscure, you might think. WRONG! These guys had decided to don crochet beards, and do a peculiar jig in almost unison. During this part, the lead singer had switched his accordion for a ukelele, and the others had a drum and the banjo. It was amusing to watch, and reminded me of some kind of early 70's TV show, what with the dancing and colour choices.

But what of the music?! Firstly, they really could have been louder. The speaker system was disappointingly quiet. That certainly did them no favours, considering the powerful but quiet vocals of the frontman, and the vocal harmonies couldn't compete with the other stages, despite being much further away.

What could be heard though was inoffensive, indeed actually really good to listen. They have that bizarre, eclectic energy of Gogol Bordello, with a vocal and music style similar to that of DaVotchKa. The accordion did fluctuate from really enjoyable to downright annoying very quickly.

Uberloon seem to very much enjoy what they do, and the audience enjoyed them when they could hear.
