V&A Arts Review

On the 7th of April 2016, I went to a 'design through the ages exhibition in the V&A in London. I haven't seen anything about design through the ages before so it was a really interesting experience. The exhibition talked about different styles, when they were and what they involved.

My View

I think that the exhibition was really good because it showed really clearly what types of things there were in each time period with examples. The way I think it could have been improved would be laying it out in the museum better. The exhibition had different blocks of time but it was hard to find each one. We ended up in 1900 before 1800.

I would recommend this for anyone wanting to learn more about interior design because it gives you a feel of what it was like in those times because of a wide variety of objects and a few showrooms.

A Few Things I Learnt

Jacobean : 1600-1625

  • Rich materials and textures were very fashionable.
  • Canvas was painted to represent fancy wood.
  • Wood was painted to represent marble.
  • Objects were exaggerated in shape and were exuberant.

Exoticism : 1920-1940

This was the term used to describe the design style when artists were inspired by distant lands and unexplored territory - including the designer's sub-conscious.

The Upholsterer as Interior Designer : 1660-1710

  • Upholsterers supplied furniture and fabric for houses.
  • They made fitted hangings for walls and beds.
  • Upholsterers made chairs and settees more comfortable by adding things like wool or horsehair.

Fascinating. I find that exhibitions which span different time periods can be quite muddled but it sounds like this one was organised and really engaging!
