J.M.W. Turner and the Art of Watercolour

In November 2015, for my Bronze Award, I went to an exhibition of watercolours by J.M.W. Turner at Arts Award Supporter Higgins Art Gallery, in Bedford.

J.M.W. Turner and the Art of Watercolour

79b284ed7c632cac11fae5f8f5660e578ccc3319.jpgThis was an exhibition of nine watercolour paintings by the 18th/19th century artist J.M.W Turner.

The first thing I noticed was the title of the exhibition was written in gold letters along one wall, the combination of the gold and the spotlights drew me in.

The nine paintings were all placed along the deep violet walls horizontally and theywere all individually lit. The purple walls and the dim lights made the room feel really exciting and calm at the same time.

When I first looked at the paintings they looked more like a big smudge but the longer I looked the more i realised what it was. In the paintings there were all sorts of things that you couldn't see at first like mountains, people and animals.

The paintings were very dramatic and almost pulled you inside them. Something I noticed about all the paintings was that they all had either rocks, water and waterfalls or all of them, they were also all quite dark. The skies and the seas and the rocks were beautiful but felt quite lonely.

My favourite one was of a rocky farm next to a waterfall and a lake with some very tiny people and animals in the distance.

This was the first art gallery of paintings i've ever been to and I really enjoyed it.

This sounds like a great first exhibition, you've really managed to capture the mood of the paintings in your write up. What else are you doing for your Arts Award? I can see from your profile that you want to be a fashion designer, what an amazing ambition! I used to want to do something similar and focused on fashion when I did my Silver Arts Award. I'd love to hear more about what you're doing. Thanks for posting!
