John Rutter's 70th Birthday Concert Review

A review of John Rutter's 70th Birthday Concert in St Paul's Cathedral, London.

John Rutter's 70th Birthday Concert was excellent. John Rutter himself was the conductor of both the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, and the Bach Choir. Our seats weren't the best in terms of view, but this didn't matter as just the architecture itself coupled with the amazing acoustics was enough to entertain us for the evening. The concert started off with some of Mozart's Requiem, which sounded glorious in such a large space. I enjoyed most of the Mozart, but I do find that some of Mozart is very similar and repetitive and tends to get dull and predictable after some time. After the interval, we got to hear some pieces written by John Rutter, whose birthday the concert was celebrating. I personally love John Rutter, and I have sung some of his work in my school Chamber Choir as well, and this section of the evening was much more enjoyable (not that Mozart wasn't a remarkable composer). I loved being there in the atmosphere of a live orchestra, especially as it was in one of the most beautiful, acoustically complimentary locations possible.
