Sicario (2015) Review

Denis Villeneuve's visceral look at the war on drugs is a thrill ride that should be experienced by everyone. The film gives the viewer a look into the very real world of Mexican drug cartels and their wrongdoings.

The film stars Emily Blunt as Kate Macer a Senior FBI agent (albeit a very idealistic one) who after investigating the home of suspected kidnappers gets caught up in a drug raid. She is then called in by higher level Agent Matt Graver (josh Brolin) to work for a federal task force and cross the border to stop one of the main perpetrators of the drug trafficking,we follow our hero and her journey thereafter as she meets these rather savoury Agents one of which includes Alejandro Gillick (Benicio del Toro).

While away our main character is shown the true nature of the war on drugs and how it affects the people of mexico and as the viewer you really feel how out of her depth and uncomfortable she is in this area. She is very uninformed about what they're doing in mexico, our hero is in fact not there for the reasons she thinks.

One of the things that really worked for me in this film is the action and how its portrayed, in many action film gunfights with trained individuals are very clumsy and haphazard but not in Sicario these soldiers and FBI agents act as such. the gunfights are gritty, natural and quick, as they should be.

Another area where i must applaud this film is in the sound design, not just the sounds of the guns and the environment which are incredible but the music in tandem with those things, they work cohesively together. A scene that comes to mind is the sound of a helicopter flying by as the score plays the vehicle almost sounds like an extension to that score and its Gorgeous.

Roger Deakins was the DP for this film and his work is as good as ever. this is an absolutely beautiful film, from the indoor scenes in the apartments to the outdoor scenes on the roads of mexico. But no other sequence stands out like the scenes towards the rear of the film that are filmed in complete darkness with only the light of the moon being visible in some areas and the cast wearing night vision goggles in others.

Final Thoughts

The action is incredibly shot, there are great performances from all the actors and the story is very interesting, This film is portrayed from the perspective of Emily Blunt until near the end where the story unravels and the viewer is given more insight. If anyone else had been involved in the making of this film this could of been another run of the mill action film but Denis Villeneuve & Roger Deakins did a great job creating a real and believable world and that should be commended.

Go watch this film.
