Les Miserables Review

For my Silver Arts Award, I wrote a review for Les Miserables

Les Miserables Review

First of all, I believe that this is the best musical I have seen so far! It first premiered in Paris in 1980 and later debuted in London’s West End in 1985, where it has run continuously since. It has powerful storytelling and emotionally engaging songs that brings this masterpiece to life in a way that resonates deeply with the audience,

The narrative is timeless and relatable as the theatre production immerses the audience in the characters' struggles and triumphs. From Fantine's despair to the courage of the revolutionaries, the show elicits tears, laughter, and inspiration. The set designs and costumes are breathtaking and the live experience of hearing the music created create an astounding atmosphere.

The staging was immaculate and included the use of a turntable to create seamless transitions and dynamic scenes. The visuals and staging were magical especially for the inn in Montfermeil and the barricades during the rebellion scene. This helped immerse the audience into the action and the story unfolding.

The show reminds audiences of the resilience of the human spirit, the power of love, and the importance of standing up for justice. Les Misérables is a deeply moving story that touches hearts and is a catalyst for change. It made me reflect deeply on the complexities of human nature. Jean Valjean’s redemption reminded me of how people can change for the better when shown kindness and forgiveness from others. It brings out the hope for humanity.

However, while I loved the realistic aspect of the theatre there was an overwhelming amount of suffering. The constant tragedies and hardships faced by the characters were an emotional rollercoaster. It sometimes feels like there’s no relief from the relentless sorrow.

Overall, Les Misérables is a thought-provoking work with complex characters. I loved every single part of it, the overwhelming tragedy and the beauty and emotion of the story. It’s a must-see for those who love drama, history, and wonderful storytelling.

A great review Maisie, looking at your picture I think I sat in a similar seat to watch this production! It truly is timeless and a very emotive performance - I never tire of watching it.
