Frau Trapp’s ‘Five Lines’ MimeLondon at Barbican

‘Five Lines’ is a bold and inventive production that employs micro cinema-theatre to transport us into a dystopian world, examining the extremes our society could reach.

The use of live cameras on intricate miniatures creates a sense of delicacy and sweetness, mirroring the love story that opens the piece. A live saxophone score infuses the beginning with a jazzy warmth before the production shifts into a darker and bleaker world.

The format begins from a place of reality, introducing the performers through close-ups before plunging us into a miniature tyrannically ruled underground world after an aftermath of climate catastrophe. This surreal yet unsettlingly plausible narrative is heightened by the performers’ hands-on manipulation of the miniatures, reinforcing the sense of oppression.

Amidst the depths of disillusionment, a fleeting glimpse of hope emerges that a utopia remains within reach for those willing to build it.

'Five Lines' is a refreshingly original concept, executed with precision and imagination.
