The performance opens with a striking image: swans haunting the prince’s dreams, immediately immersing us in the oversized, imposing castle where he resides. On the cusp of adulthood, the prince wrestles with the weight of his royal responsibilities, the societal expectations of manhood, and his yearning for affection from an emotionally distant mother. Among the characters introduced is the prince’s girlfriend, whose depth defies initial stereotypes. Bourne cleverly subverts the trope of the ‘blonde ditz’, portraying her as the one person who genuinely cares for and tries to help the troubled prince.
The ballet really kicks off when the mesmerising swans enter and the hypnotic choreography ensues. The dance captures the essence of this majestic animal with its contradictory behaviour and nature, luring and hissing, grace and power. These qualities mirror the internal conflicts the prince must reconcile as he confronts adulthood. To interpret what the swans symbolise would be a disservice as it reveals its layered meanings throughout the narrative. The incorporation of audible breaths and collective thuds from their stamping adds a visceral, electrifying energy. Moments of homoerotic tension add further complexity, and Bourne’s meticulous attention to detail to Tschaikovsky’s music is nothing short of breathtaking.
Harrison Dowzell is captivating as the Swan, exuding magnetism with every move. The entire cast delivers stellar performances, with Katrina Lyndon standing out as the girlfriend. Her comedic physicality and nuanced background acting seamlessly help weave subplot and main narrative together.
The production culminates in a poignant exploration of male mental health, underscored by its stunning choreography and emotionally rich storytelling. Whether you’re a seasoned admirer of Bourne’s work or experiencing his artistry for the first time, this revival of Swan Lake remains as groundbreaking and resonant today as it was three decades ago.
