On 27 September 2024, my family and I went to The MAC, Birmingham to see 'Celebrity Robots' by Pauline Farrar.
Pauline turns household items into artworks of celebrities, which are being displayed at The MAC. Pauline spent about a year gathering vintage metal parts in order to transform them into works of art. Pauline used to be a Goldsmith, but is now an artist. She was featured on a Channel 4 TV show, and currently lives in Edinburgh.
This 'robot' is David Attenborough. Unfortunately, if I had not seen the sign next to him saying so, I would not have known. The netting over his head is a bug net and has butterflies stuck to it. His eyebrows are made out of cupboard handles, and his head is a kettle. I think the kettle works well as a face because the spout makes a good (but rather long!) nose.
These next pictures are famous singers. My mum knew who they all were, but I only knew a couple of them. My mum thinks that the Miley Cyrus Robot does look quite like Miley Cyrus. All of their heads appear to be made from either kettles or white blocks of some sort (I'm not sure what the white blocks were, but they had lips on, so obviously made good heads!). Taylor Swift's bathwater is made up of jewellery, to resemble the scene from the music video 'Look What You Made Me Do'. All of this jewellery was saved from landfill, and does resemble bath bubbles from a distance.
This next image is of Benjamin Zephaniah. His hair was a good representation of his dreadlocks. He is sitting on what appears to be a stack of books with the titles of his poems, but it is actually a bunch of chopping boards with stickers on. He has no legs.
The final photo is of Gordon Ramsey, who, my mother tells me, is known for being an aggressive chef. I find this rather amusing. I think his hair is made from cable, and his face is once again made from a kettle. I'm not sure, but his arms looked like they might be made of taps.
Overall, this isn't the kind of artwork that I would like to create. I think it is a bit creepy, but it was an interesting experience to go and see them, and I liked laughing at the ideas that were used. I found it interesting to know that Pauline is disabled, and rather than let that get in her way, she has made an effort to keep being creative and do something she loves.
