On 3rd October, I went to see Starlight Express at the Wembley Troubadour Theatre. The atmosphere was incredible, with loud music, shiny and colourful costumes and roller skate tracks running through the audience.
I particularly liked the lighting throughout this performance, as the lighting changed a lot to reflect the mood of the scene or to highlight a particular character. The set was unlike any other performance, with a small circular stage in the centre and a steep, daring slope at the back which the actors used frequently. At the top of the slope, there was a platform with tracks running down both sides and through the audience.
One thing I loved about the show was that the whole cast was on roller skates the entire time (with the exception of some, who were on scooters and performed some incredible stunts) which not only made the show unique, but also enhanced the fact that they were playing the characters of trains, which are on wheels.
The costumes were bold and perfectly suited to the atmosphere of the show, and the characters they were playing. Rusty the steam train’s costume, for example, was an orange, rusty colour, and had steam coming out of the back at times.
One thing that could have been improved, in my opinion, was the storyline. At times, it was hard to follow what was going on, and why the characters made the decisions they did. But overall, it was an amazing performance, and one I would definitely see again if I got the chance.
