Lil Wenker: BANGTAIL

"Where is this show going to go?" That was genuinely the question I had within the first minute of the lights dimming and Lil Wenker bursting through the door with her drawn-on moustache and spoon-spurs. What we got was a masterclass in clowning that both made the crowd roar with laughter and kept them on their toes.

Working with director Cecily Nash, Wenker has produced an exceptionally tight show of two halves. 'Bangtail' explores what it means to be masculine, and questions the purpose of life. It's a clever premise, with a transition halfway through that helps sell that underlying identity crisis men are so often in the midst of.

Wenker’s clowning prowess is exceptional, but as impressive is her ability to get the audience to go along with her antics. This is a show that relies heavily on audience buy-in, and a less confident and talented performer could have crumbled under that pressure. Wenker takes it in her stride, expanding her one-woman show to a big cast of performers, who all paid for the privilege of being involved. Genius!

Given that this is Wenker’s first solo hour at the Fringe, it’s incredible what she's managed to achieve. I promise that you will have a good time; this show truly is excellent.
