Alexander Bennett: Emotional Daredevil

Take the risk.

Alexander Bennett: Emotional Daredevil

Do you consider yourself an honest person? What are your fears? What is holding you back? These are the questions that Alexander Bennett will force you to confront in his new show, performing at Gilded Balloon Patterhouse at 18:20.

But it's not just a show of personal introspection, Alexander is using this hour to take big risks, show real emotional vulnerability, and try something new.

Comedy is so often used as a means of dealing with trauma, or working through insecurities with levity. Get it wrong and the show becomes an emotional burden to the audience. I’m pleased to say that Bennett threads the needle near perfectly. Emotionally open and honest, he talks about his issues with trust, his PTSD, and even finds the time to make a very impassioned (and sadly, societally necessary) trans rights speech. And he sings!

I’m somewhat scrambling for things to say, as Bennett asked us specifically not to share the mechanics of the show, but they’re in many ways integral to what makes it so successful. Indeed, I've had to edit this review at his request for giving away too much of the game – but he was right to request it. This really is a show that needs you to go in blind but open-minded. So, rather than spend time fumbling around trying to avoid spoilers, I will mirror what he said on stage: take a risk. I'm sure you’ll have a good time.
