The Libertines On The Beach 28/07/2024

The Libertines are a band who were originally signed by Alan McGee they are indie rock and are known for their poetical lyrics and their infamous tabloid publicity which was at least partly an intentional move to gain publicity.

Pete Doherty one of the lead singers had a heroin addiction and famously dated both Kate Moss and Amy Winehouse. Now he lives with his baby daughter and his film-maker wife Katia De Vidas in France as documented in the recent Louis Theroux documentry which was aired on the BBC

The Libertines performed this concert on the last weekend of Brighton 2024's 'On the Beach' series. They were supported by Irish Folk band The Mary Wallopers and Britpop band The Charlatans (check out their song 'The Only One I Know'). When the Libertines performed to the crowd which numbered about 10,000 Pete Doherty's dog wondered onstage at one point he seemed oblivious to what was going on. The last song that was played was 'Don't look Back into The Sun.' There was just the right amount of old songs and new to keep the crowd thoroughly engaged throughout the performance.

During What Katie Did a song which was cowritten by Pete and Kate Moss, the whole crowd sang back the lyrics -'since you said goodbye Polkadots fill my eyes and I don't know why'. It's clear that due to the timeless appeal of the Libertines' backcataloge and the enduring appeal of frontmen Pete Dohertyand Carl Barat they will never go out of style!
