The Great Escape: Kween Deekayy Review

Confident, controlled, and above all articulate, Kween Deekayy kicked off the Girls I Rate stage, taking the Patterns basements to high heights on day three of The Great Escape.

The Great Escape: Kween Deekayy Review

I’ll start simply; Kween Deekayy was the first, and undoubtedly best performance I’ll see during The Great Escape, and I have a fair few promising names still to hit on my list.

Following a viral Tik Tok hit, an SBTV feature, and a cool 440k spotify hits on track Jiggy, Kween Deekayy best get familiar with the limelight. Her performance was measured, and for lack of a better word; impressive. It’s no mean feat to retain that level of tone and control over a drill beat – with a hyped crowd and adrenaline pumping, we’re no stranger to hearing a strained and throaty rap vocal, but Kween Deekayy was anything but. It’s a skill not to shout, and Kween Deekayy knows it, translating her high energy rap into a lyrical conversation between performer and audience, and by jove were we listening. There’s something decidedly compelling about this hard-to-find, resolute and intentional hold on bars – no lyrics were left behind; the only thing that was dropped was the determined thud of a drill beat.

Kween Deekayy has a way with genre, playing with afrobeats, rap, and drill in just a hasty 20 minute window. It’s safe to say that she knows what she’s doing, spitting expressive lyrics speaking to her identity, community, and connection to LGBTQIA+ spaces with a deft and flirtatious verve. As a writer, reviewer, and rap fanatic, Kween Deekayy really answered my brief of finding up-and-coming talent that has control over their sound, but having bagged third place in the Girls I Rate #GetHeard competition, “emerging” doesn’t quite cut it. Kween Deekayy is heading up the tide of underground women in rap spitting what we all want to hear, paving the way for the next generation of artists hopping on the beat with drive.

I’m no monarchist; but this royal will have a hold on the nation in no time.
