Review of Jack and the Beanstalk at Belgrade Theatre in Coventry

Jack and the Beanstalk at Belgrade Theatre is Coventry’s giant of a pantomime. I went along to see the show and here’s what I thought…

Review of Jack and the Beanstalk at Belgrade Theatre in Coventry

This spectacular pantomime was written and directed by Fun Song Factory star Iain Lauchlan, who has been an entertainer for 42 years and also appears in the show as Dame Trott. The show provided amazing live entertainment for theatergoers.

As I entered the auditorium, I was wowed by the magical new set making its debut on the stage in Coventry. It was bright and colourful and features incredible costumes, special effects, sound, and lighting. The set was produced by 3D creations who produce the set for the London Palladium pantomime, making it feel very much like a West End show.

Jack and the Beanstalk had top production standards with a huge amount of effort, creativity, and attention to detail went into staging this polished production. It brought the classic tale of Jack and the Beanstalk to life, and audiences are going to be thrilled by the spectacle and the magical moments this show features.

It’s always interesting to see with this particular panto title how the Beanstalk will come to life, and this Beanstalk had a personality – it was so funny. I also enjoyed the comical appearance of Daisy the Cow who received lovely admiration from the audience.

I would have liked to have seen more costumes from Dame Trott and thought some of the costumes featured were a bit repetitive. There were points in the show where I was expecting to see a new costume and Dame Trott would still be wearing ones we had already seen. However, the costumes we did see were amazing – especially the one for the finale.

The show also stars Craig Hollingsworth as Simple Simon, who had great comedic timing, with him and Dame Trott working well together as great comedy scene partners. This is Craig’s 11th pantomime in Coventry, starring alongside Iain who are both familiar faces to the Belgrade Theatre pantomime scene and are well-loved by audiences time and time again.

I very much liked how the show is tailored for Coventry audiences, with local references and audience interaction from various characters who all had great stage presence. The show is co-produced by Belgrade Theatre in association with Imagine Theatre and featured a super talented cast who were all incredible.

I would recommend this to anybody looking for a family fun show this Christmas, a very well-deserved 4 stars. Catch it whilst you can until January 7 2023.
