The debut EP from Glaswegian four-piece Spyres is a raucous shot of riffs and attitude. Leaning into a pop-influenced sound throughout the EP, most notably on Lost Without You, and a newly gentler sound on Hated You First, Spyres have firmly expanded their sonic horizons from the relentless punk energy of their initial singles. That’s not to say the band has rejected the sound of punk either: Trust brings the band’s familiar punk exuberance to shift up the pace.
Although it’s good to hear a broader sound from Spyres, the combination of pop-punk sonics and the frequent use of lyrics focusing on youthful romance does leave the EP sounding more like a 00s teen rom-com soundtrack than perhaps benefits it. Although all the songs are solid and catchy, only Trust comes close to living up to the high expectations set by the brilliance of Otherside and Fake ID.
However, this new expansion of their punk sound is undoubtedly evocative of modern pop-rock sensations such as Baby Queen and Olivia Rodrigo, so Spyres are sure to have a bright future ahead of them.
