Showstopper! The Improvised Musical

With a combination of audience suggestions and on-stage direction, ‘Showstopper: The Improvised Musical’ is able to create an entirely new musical in just under 70 minutes.

Showstopper! The Improvised Musical

It does sound impossible to say that a musical can be created out of nothing but references to other musical’s songs, an audience suggested setting and some talented performers on stage. But that is exactly what this show manages to do.

Credit must go to the incredible band and actors that come together to make sense of the nonsensical. Skill is needed to sing, dance and act on stage, let alone think on your feet, entertaining an audience with no plan whilst singing and dancing. It was impressive to say the least but mostly, I enjoyed how wonderfully funny the whole show was.

The particular show I watched was set in a hospital and inspired Bugsy Malone, RENT and Chicago. I thought that the main actor playing an intern doctor was absolutely hilarious, especially when he came up with increasingly ridiculous names for disease.

What really sold me was the energy that came from both the performers and audience, making the show such a joy to watch because you could tell that those on stage and off were really having a good time. Of course, as with any improv show, there were moments that were slightly ridiculous but I did like the attempts to integrate this into the show by using the on stage director to re-do moments when things got too weird.

This is the musical to watch at Fringe for all lovers of the genre - if you’re a fan of musicals, look no further than ‘Showstopper’.
