I Am No Bird: A modern Bronte story.

A brilliant performance by very talented women. I really enjoyed seeing this and it made me feel inspired, interested and empowered.

I strongly suggest anyone to go and see this inspirational performance!

Whilst I was waiting for the story to be told, I noticed that the seats were very comfortable in the front room of the Burnley mechanics. These seats were green and yellow, to me they were very vibrant and appealing to the eye. I could already see props on stage and these were quite vintage and were lovely to look at. The atmosphere was chatty but very chilled as it was quite a small venue which I love as I felt a lot of comfort. A great addition whilst I waited for the performance to start was a piano playing in the background, this gave you an insight to what you were about to see on stage. The venue felt very relaxing and easy going.

I felt that this performance was very impactful, inspiring and empowering for all women. At the start they were dressed in bonnets and long dresses, these were soon taken off to reveal modern day clothes and to me this was symbolic to how women should be able to have their own sense of style and to be themselves. The actresses voices gave me Goosebumps throughout the performance as their singing voices were strong and powerful. I noticed that all 3 women brought something different as they were all very unique. I felt that Sophia Hatfield who played Charlotte Bronte had a more of a sweeter sounding voice, Claire-Marie Seddon who played Emily Bronte had a more fiercer sounding voice and that Emma Swan who played Anne Bronte had a more enthusiastic sounding voice. I loved that they all had different accents which added a lot more diversity to the performance. The performance made me realise what it was like for women back when we didn't have much recognition and how hard it must have been to be a woman surrounded by men that thought we shouldn't be creative.

Throughout the whole performance it was very amusing and I loved the impromptu feel as it brought it into a more realistic performance where things could have gone wrong but we knew that this could have been a part of their script and it was very believable so these actresses were very good at their job. I found it very interesting to see how the Bronte sisters would have been like together, the performance was very good at making me understand how they would have bonded, such as them being supportive when a book got published but also seeing the jealousy that it wasn't one of theirs. Before coming to the performance, I had no idea who the Bronte sisters were but I am now very intrigued to find out more about them, the overall performance was wonderful and I very much enjoyed seeing their talent and this modern take on the Bronte story. I won't give away too many details about the performance as I believe that you would have to see it for yourself to see how fantastic the performance was.

At the end of the show, I was able to stay seated and listen to a Q&A with the performers. This was interesting as I was able to hear how the performance was put together. I would love to see more performances like this one that make women understand that they can be what they want to be.

I saw this performance on Thursday 5th May 2022.

It was shown at the Burnley Mechanics Theatre.

I do believe that they may be performing this in other parts of Lancashire in the up coming future.

What a great review Holly, I could imagine myself there following your desciptions of the venue! It sounds like a quality performance and I like how they bring historic tales into the current day. Was there anything in particular that surprised you from the Q&A?

Nothing really surprised me from the Q&A but I did find it extremely interesting to hear about how they brought the story to life!
